Bond Investments

Corporate bonds are a standard instrument used by companies to finance development and growth. For investors, they offer attractive appreciation of available capital. The base prospectus for the bond programme is approved by the Czech National Bank. Bonds are issued through a public offering and some may be fully tradable on a public market, giving investors the flexibility they need in their decision-making.

Frequently asked questions

Bonds are debt securities that express the obligation of the issuer towards the creditor. Through a bond, issuers undertake to repay a specified amount, the nominal value of the bond, at maturity and to pay regular interest.

Paper bonds have a physical form and the investor physically holds them. They consist of the bond certificate and a coupon sheet. Book-entry bonds exist as a record and are registered together with the owner’s name in a securities register.

The nominal value of a bond is the value set by the issuer in the issue terms. For example, it may be CZK 100,000, but it can also be significantly higher or lower. Purchasing a bond at the value stated in the issue terms is only possible before the issue date.

Coupon, or interest, is the issuer’s remuneration to the creditor for borrowed money. It is expressed as a percentage of the nominal value and is paid regularly, usually annually or semi-annually, regardless of changes in the bond price or interest rates.

The Czech National Bank (CNB) approves the issuer’s bond prospectus, but reviews only its formal requirements. It does not assess the business project issuing the bond, the economic sense of the project financed by the bond proceeds, or the issuer’s credibility. The information needed to make an investment decision must be obtained and assessed by the prospective investor themselves.

Corporate bonds may under certain conditions provide companies with a better interest rate than a bank loan. Bond issuance is often a more efficient and less costly process than applying for and going through an approval process with a financial institution.
